“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” – 3 John 2 KJV
God’s healthcare plan for us can be summarized in this passage found in the Bible – His desire is that we’re all healthy and happy! Currently, the COVID-19 crisis has the world experiencing the opposite, with lives lost and governments in disarray. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared this rapidly spreading virus outbreak a pandemic. Fear is gripping the hearts of many, and there seems to be no solution in sight. Let’s discuss God’s Biblical plan of health in relation to infectious diseases like the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
“Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).”(1)
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) a new infectious strain, discovered in 2019, a novel virus not previously identified in humans.
The symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19) you should look for:
According to the CDC, “reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.” The virus causes respiratory impairments (like the flu) with symptoms:
- Runny Nose
- Sore Throat
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty breathing (Severe cases)
- In more severe cases, pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, death
- Fever, cough, and shortness of breath may appear 2-14 days after exposure. (2)
Where and how did the Coronavirus (COVID-19) erupt?
The source of the coronavirus is believed to be a “wet market” in Wuhan China selling both live and dead animals. These markets sold a variety of domestic and exotic animals. This environment is a hot bed for zoonotic viruses, which are infectious diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans – especially if animals are stored and slaughtered on site.
If this is indeed the correct source of the Coronavirus outbreak, then it would again prove the Biblical plan of health as accurate. God outlines a list of unclean animals to be excluded from the human diet, recorded in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. Even as far back as the account of the Flood (Genesis 7:1-3), God establishes a very important distinction between clean and unclean animals. This healthcare plan that God established is important for all humanity, and when we go against the plan, there are grave consequences.
The specific animal source of this Coronavirus outbreak has not yet been identified or confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The popular thought is that the original host is thought to be bats. Although bats were not sold at the Wuhan market, cross-infection and contamination between other animals may have been the culprit.
Well, who is at risk?
To date, more than 723,594 positive cases have been recorded, with over 33,998 deaths and roughly 151,824 have recovered worldwide. With that said, about 80 percent of people recover from COVID-19 without needing hospitalization or special treatment.
According to data from the Chinese authorities, around 80 percent of cases of the disease are mild to moderate (either asymptomatic or very few symptoms occur), 20 percent require hospitalization, and the death rate has varied by country. Considering these statistics, who should be really worried about this virus?
According to the WHO “Illness due to COVID-19 infection is generally mild, especially for children and young adults. However, it can cause serious illness: about 1 in every 5 people who catch it need hospital care.” (3)
Interestingly, the death rate starts to increase for those over 50 years of age. Those under 50 years of age who are infected have a fatality rate of 0.2-0.4%, while those 50-59 years, experience a 1.3% mortality rate. For those 60-69 years it’s 3.6%, for 70-79 year olds it’s 8.0%, and for those over 80 years of age it is 14.8%.
The elderly, over 65 age demographic, with underlying medical conditions or low immunity are especially at risk. According to China’s National Health Commission, about 80% of people who died from the virus in China were over the age of 60, and a whopping 75% had pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or lung disease.
Others at risk are healthcare workers caring for patients with COVID-19, and those in close contact with others infected.
The CDC recommendations to prevent COVID-19 spread
If you are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19 because of your age or because you have a serious long-term health condition, the CDC has made this of urgent importance for you to take action to reduce your risk of getting sick with the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevent (CDC) recommends:
- Stock up on supplies, including food as well as hygienic supplies (hand sanitizer, cleaning agents, etc).
- Take everyday precautions to keep space between yourself and others.
- Avoid cruise travel and non-essential air travel.
- During a COVID-19 outbreak in your community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce your risk of being exposed.
- Practice good hygiene and keep clean (including frequent hand washing).
- Wash your hands after touching surfaces in public places.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects.
- Clean and disinfect your home to remove germs: practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces (ex. tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks & cell phones)
- Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, etc.
- Most importantly, build your immune system naturally.
What is the Biblical account of God’s healthcare plan?
God has outlined through the Bible, principles which we can apply to bring about optimal health. We can truncate them in an acronym – G.O.D.S.P.L.A.N.
G – Godly Trust
O – Open Air
D – Daily Exercise
S – Sunlight
- P – Proper Rest
L – Lots of Water
A – Always Temperate
- N – Nutrition
Living a holistic lifestyle that encompasses these health principles will encourage best practices for overall health. In the case of maintaining respiratory health, in light of this Coronavirus pandemic, the first line of defense is to fortify your immune system. The immune system consists of organs, cells, tissues, and proteins which collectively protect against viruses, bacteria, and foreign bodies that cause infection or disease. When the immune system comes into contact with a pathogen, it triggers an immune response.
The immune system releases antibodies, which attach to antigens on the pathogens and kill them. Incorporating sufficient nutrition is integral in forming a robust immune system.
What does God recommend?
God’s original healthcare plan, found in Genesis 1:29, is 100% plant-based. It’s the most optimal diet for mankind. Interesting enough, The WHO recommends avoiding the consumption of raw or undercooked meat as well as animal organs. In addition, the WHO highly advises the avoidance of contact with live animals and surfaces in live markets areas that have recently had positive coronavirus cases.
Zoonotic diseases, just like the Coronavirus, continue to post an exponential threat to human existence, especially if the consumption of animal flesh is “the norm”. A flesh-based diet increases the risk of developing fatal diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and hypertension which account for more lives lost than Coronavirus. However, having a predisposed condition, such as cancer, heart disease, and hypertension will dramatically increase the risk of infection and death if exposed to the Coronavirus.
God, through nature, has provided natural foods and plants to help boost our immune system. Again, His plan is that we all enjoy health on this planet!

In the book of Matthew 24:7, the Bible speaks to an increase of pestilences (diseases and plagues) on Earth as we inch closer and closer to the end of time. All of these signs are an indication of the beginning of the end. Our only hope is to take this virus seriously as a wake up call to jump aboard God’s healthcare plan – making a complete lifestyle change – physically, mentally, socially, and most of all, spiritually.
